Note : Microsoft Security Essentials is only for Microsoft users who are using a genuine copy of Windows. If your O.S. is not genuine, then don’t download it. It won’t work.
Microsoft Security Essentials, code named Morro is out. As promised by Microsoft, Security Essentials is released yesterday (29th September, 2009). This is not the first security product from Microsoft. They’ve already released Windows defender and Windows Live one care. Windows Defender, an antispyware from Microsoft actually failed to compete with other free antivirus and antispyware products. With Windows Live One Care things got better. The detection rate was good, but it is not free, so many people not even cared about One Care, because in this paid security market we already have world renowned security providers such as Kaspersky, Mcafee, Symantec, Eset and many more. So, Microsoft strategy failed. I think this is what made Microsoft to come up with a free antivirus. The competition in paid security market is huge when compared to free antivirus market, hence Microsoft released this free antivirus. This is a very intelligent move from Microsoft. I won’t be surprised even if Microsoft release a paid security suite and start bugging free antivirus users to upgrade to the paid version (as Avira did). I hope, they won’t do that.

Coming to the point, Microsoft Security Essentials has all the features that any other free antivirus have to offer. It will
- Protect you against viruses and other malware.
- Protect you against spyware, adware and more.
- Automatic updates
- Works with Windows 7

This August, PC World has tested all the major free antivirus and the results are very much in favor of Microsoft, because Microsoft Security Essentials shared it’s stand along with AVG free antivirus. In that test (out of 100), Avira stood first with an overall score of 92, followed by Avast whose score is 91. AVG free edition and Microsoft Security Essentials shared the third spot with a score of 86. At the time of test, Microsoft Security Essentials is in beta, so PC World predicted that Security Essentials will become a major contender to other free antivirus developers when it is out of beta. You can see full free antivirus comparison at PC World. Now, Security Essentials is out of beta and so everyone has a chance to try it. I tried it and here are my observations :
- The installer size is only 8.61MB for XP and 4.72MB for Vista and Win 7, whereas Avira is of 32.39MB, Avast is 36.99MB, AVG 65.39MB
- Very low on system resources.
Can’t wait to test it or use it?
