Locking Windows or denying access to desktop is very important when we have a shared computer. But, when we lock Windows it’ll take us back to the login screen due to which we can’t view the activities that are going on desktop. Sometimes, this can be a problem. But, thankfully there are ways to prevent access to Windows desktop which allow us to see what is going on behind the locked desktop. Making the locked Windows desktop transparent is important for some users, like for example, for PC technicians when trying to run an antivirus and willing to take extreme precautions by preventing others to interfere the scan progress or when performing computer based computational calculation or while performing any activity where we want visibility and at the same time not wanting others to disturb the ongoing process.

ClearLock is a free windows locking software, which helps you to lock windows system and get the screen Transparency at the same time. The software is portable has a support for Windows Vista and 7 (32 and 64 bit). Its size is only 441 KB.
After extraction of the software archive files, we can choose either the 32bit or the 64bit version. Launching the software will welcome the user by asking for password.

After entering a password click on SAVE and the desktop will be locked but remains transparent. The password is hidden inside a Configuration Settings, ClearLock.ini file which can be found in the extracted folder.
If you enter wrong password for 3 times, you will not be allowed to enter the password for next 5 minutes. Later, when you access the system after entering the correct password, it shows the number of invalid login attempts as well.
In order to change the password, delete the Configuration Settings file ClearLock.ini first and then launch the application. Now you can choose a new password. For safety reason note the password securely somewhere else to remember it, just in case if you forget the password.
You can launch and modify ClearLock settings from Command Prompt. If you want to modify ClearLock settings then in the CMD box type
ClearLock /config
and hit enter then a new ClearLock Configuration screen will pop-up to personalize ClearLock.
- In the Access Control tab you can set Policy rules concerning invalid attempts, customize the message that appears when to unlock the locked desktop, and most important Ability to Change the Password.

- In the Appearance tab, you can Disable/Enable screensaver, Disable/Enable Sound Effects, Use Custom Background Image (BMP/JPEG/GIF), modify Background Transparency Level and Color.

After finishing configuration all rules will be saved in ClearLock.ini file which can be opened with notepad for investigation.
ClearLock can be used as a program to disable the desktop access of your own Windows computer. It can be easily integrated into USB key among other portable applications. It can be pinned to Taskbar or Start Menu for quick access. It’ll help PC users in various situations where denying access to the desktop is important fact, along with visibility to desktop.
